Matter, Thread, ESP32C3, ESP32H2: A Smart Lighting Driver Glossary

Quick definitions for the terms that actually matter when choosing a driver

Matter

The cross-platform smart home standard this driver is certified against. A single Matter certification lets a device work with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Home Assistant, instead of needing separate integrations for each ecosystem.

Matter over Wi-Fi

Matter running directly over the home Wi-Fi network. No extra hardware needed — used by the ESP32C3 variant of this driver.

Matter over Thread

Matter running on Thread, a low-power wireless mesh protocol. Requires a Thread Border Router already active on the network. Used by the ESP32H2 variant of this driver.

ESP32C3

Espressif's RISC-V Wi-Fi + Bluetooth LE chip. In this driver, it's the chip behind the Wi-Fi/Matter-over-Wi-Fi variant.

ESP32H2

Espressif's RISC-V 802.15.4 (Thread/Zigbee) + Bluetooth LE chip. In this driver, it's the chip behind the Thread/Matter-over-Thread variant.

Thread Border Router

A device that bridges a Thread mesh network to the regular Wi-Fi/IP network. Required for any Thread device — including the ESP32H2 driver variant — to actually connect to the internet or a hub. An Apple TV 4K or HomePod mini can act as one; ReZ-TI also sells a dedicated Thread Border Router.

CCT / Tunable White

A driver or fixture that blends two LED channels — warm and cool — to adjust color temperature continuously, rather than staying fixed at one color temperature.

Constant-current LED driver

A driver that supplies a fixed current (here, switch-selectable between 150–280mA) to the LED load, rather than a fixed voltage. Matched to the LED's forward-voltage curve for stable, even output.

SELV

Safety Extra-Low Voltage. This driver's output side is SELV-rated, meaning it's safe to touch under normal conditions.
