Matter and Thread Explained: What They Are and How They Work Together

A quick, clear explainer on Matter and Thread. What each one actually is, how they fit together, and why Rez-ti hardware supports both.

Matter and Thread Explained

If you're sourcing or specifying smart home hardware, you'll run into these two terms constantly. They're often used together, and sometimes used interchangeably. That overlap is exactly where the confusion starts. Here's the short, clear version of what each one is.

What is Matter?

Matter is an application-layer standard for smart home devices. It defines a shared "language" that lets a lock, a light, or a sensor describe itself and be controlled the same way regardless of brand. As a result, a Matter-certified device works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings without needing separate integrations for each one.

What is Thread?

Thread is a low-power wireless mesh networking protocol. It's the layer that actually moves data between devices over radio, playing a role similar to Wi-Fi or Zigbee. Thread devices form a self-healing mesh: each mains-powered device can relay data for nearby battery-powered devices, extending range without extra infrastructure.

How they fit together

Matter and Thread solve different problems. Matter runs on top of Thread (or Wi-Fi, or Ethernet) rather than replacing it.

  • Thread is the road data travels on.
  • Matter is the language spoken once devices are connected.

A "Matter over Thread" device uses Thread's mesh radio to move data, and Matter's shared standard to make sure any Matter hub or app can understand and control it. No proprietary bridge is required.

Why Rez-ti builds on both

Our chip modules are available in Wi-Fi (ESP32-C3) and Thread (ESP32-H2/C6) variants specifically so OEM partners can choose the right transport per product line. Choose Wi-Fi for simplicity with no extra hardware. Choose Thread for lower power draw and better mesh reliability in installations with many always-powered nodes. Lighting drivers, switches, and curtain motors are good examples of this, since they can double as mesh infrastructure.

FAQ

Is Thread a type of Matter, or the other way around?
Neither. They're different layers. Thread is a networking protocol. Matter is an application-layer standard that can run over Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet.

Do I need a Thread Border Router to use Matter?
Only if your devices use the Thread transport. Matter devices running over Wi-Fi don't need one.

Which Rez-ti products use Thread?
Our ESP32-H2 and ESP32-C6 variants use Thread, including lighting drivers, switches, curtain motors, and sensors. See our Matter vs Thread comparison guide for how to choose between Wi-Fi and Thread for a given product line.
